Orvis Battenkills have been around for quite some time. They have been known to be one of the best and most reliable reels Orvis ever made. In fact, we have always respected the reels for their great performance in both saltwater and fall/winter salmon - steelhead fishing.
Now, with these new machined Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock reels, we have even a better product. Take the reliable drag and clutch system from the old Battenkills and combine it with modern machining. They are machined from bar stock 6262 T6 aluminum...leaving a light, durable cage that will provide years of use. We check all of our reels and find them very consistent without the wobble associated with cast reels.
These reels feature one-piece spools allowing you to use more pressure with backing and not worry about blowing your spool apart as in non-machined reels.
The Battenkill reels feature an infinitely adjustable offset disc drag mechanism, recognized as one of the most dependable in the industry. They are very easy to switch from right-hand to left-hand operation.
We have sold these and tested them around the Beaches of the Northeast and find them to be very good performers and hold up well in harsh saltwater environments. The black and titanium finishes are anodized for a more durable finish than the painted finish on die-cast reels.
Note: We find these reels to be very light and well machined. The result is a series of reels that in the larger sizes are too light for some rods! Keep this in mind when ordering. The smaller trout sizes are perfect and match up great with today’s lighter rods. They are sized and rated properly. The size IV is a great 6 & 7 weight reel. Super light and large in diameter. The V is a great 8 & 9 wt. reel(not up to 12wt.) Follow our recommended lines and backing info below. For a more stout, saltwater reel on 9 & 10 weight rods, take a look at our Teton Tioga Series.
